OPERA BALLET VLAANDEREN AND ANTWERP SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TO MERGE INTO SINGLE INSTITUTION AS OF MARCH 1, 2026

ANTWERP — Opera Ballet Vlaanderen (OBV) and Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (ASO) are joining forces and will merge into a single unified arts institution effective 1 March 2026. The merger was established in consultation with the Flemish Government, which has granted its support and approval. The general assemblies of both organisations formally approved the merger on 26 February 2026. Both orchestras will continue to exist, each maintaining its own specific mandate.

The new organisation will operate as a single legal entity with one governing body and one management team. Both orchestras will remain in place, each retaining its unique mission and responsibilities.

This joining of forces creates an artistic beacon that encompasses, supports, and strategically aligns the disciplines of opera, dance, and symphonic music. Future collaboration across these different disciplines offers unique opportunities for groundbreaking productions, strengthening Flanders’ international position as a cultural hub. Simultaneously, the merger allows for even greater artistic ambition.

NEW STRUCTURE

The organisation will be temporarily led by a transition management team headed by Jan Raes, the current CEO of OBV.

Jan Raes: “I am closely acquainted with the strengths of both houses. This new institution gives us the opportunity to create a biotope where the immense talent of our diverse artists can flourish even further. We are building upon the rich traditions of both houses to write an inspiring new chapter for our audiences, artists, and staff.”

Flemish Minister for Culture Caroline Gennez: "With this merger, we are laying the foundation for a future-proof arts institution capable of competing at the highest international level. By uniting these two complementary organisations, we not only guarantee top-tier artistic quality and a strong cultural presence at home and abroad, but we also strengthen the entire Flemish art scene. This institution will become a catalyst and a model for inclusion and modern, connective leadership. At the same time, it is firmly committed to participatory and educational initiatives that attract a broad and diverse audience. In other words, it will become one of the crown jewels of the Flemish artistic landscape.

Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra will continue to communicate their programming under their existing names for the time being. A new name, logo, and corporate identity are planned for the 2028-2029 season.
